UROP: Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme

How Bursaries are Paid

  • The UROP Team normally handles all bursary payments for registered placements
  • Only payments sanctioned by the host department [on the UROP Placement Registration Form ] are acted upon by the UROP Team.
  • The weekly (occasionally hourly) sum agreed between the UROP participant and their supervisor is normally paid to the UROP participant in full (with no deductions) from the start of your placement either as a lump sum or every one or two weeks (in arrears) - depending on what your host supervisor/dept has requested on the Registration Form - providing that your UROP Placement Registration Form has been received by the first day of your placement. Please remember that neither tax or national insurance contributions are deductable from a bursary.
  • All payments are made by bank transfer, including to overseas bank accounts. The UROP Placement Registration Form requests bank account details. Exception: IAESTE Trainees will be advised directly by the UROP Team as to how payment of their bursary is made.
  • Remittance Advice slips (i.e. a letter confirming payment) for all payments by bank transfer are sent to you by internal mail via your host supervisor's room.
  • If the bursary is to come from a research contract your supervisor should consult Research Services Division to check that they are allowed to pay you a bursary from this source.
  • Please note that a UROP Placement Registration Form which is received after a placement has commenced will not receive preferential treatment in order to set-up any relevant bursary payments.
  • It is advisable - should a student be in doubt that whether their Registration Form has been received - that they contact the UROP Team to check.
  • Post UROP registration: should the supervisor (host department) wish to amend the amount to be paid as a bursary then confirmation of this must be communicated as per the instructions at Changes to Dates of Placement and Bursary Payment Arrangements.
  • Post UROP Registration: should a placement be shortened and the UROP participant concerned is receiving a.) a bursary from a scheme managed by the UROP Team or b.) a bursary from another source then steps will be taken (with the host department) to amend, where necessary, the payment schedule of the UROP participant and, if necessary, to claim back any overpaid portion of said bursary.
