The Department

Students practice algebraic geometry in a mathematics class

Mathematics is the engine of science and engineering. It is the set of ideas, insights and techniques that enable us to understand, analyse and solve problems. It also has an elegance and beauty that fascinates and inspires those who understand it. At Imperial we offer a range of mathematics programmes that will develop both your knowledge and your creativity.

The Department of Mathematics is world class, as demonstrated by the number of prizes won by our academic staff and the quality of our graduates. We are home to a Fields Medallist and several Fellows of the Royal Society, all of whom are active in teaching and research within the Department.

The logical and analytical skills developed through a degree in mathematics are highly valued by employers in a range of industries. Our graduates go on to work in careers in industry, government and education, as well as business, law, accountancy, international banking and computing. The MSci programmes in particular prepare students for research careers, and are recognised throughout the European Union where four-year undergraduate degrees tend to be the norm.
