The Department

Arjoon, a second year Materials undergraduate, setting up and monitoring a ‘creep’ test

Materials science and engineering are critical for innovation in fields such as healthcare, energy, environmental sustainability and aerospace. The Department of Materials prepares our students for dynamic and exciting careers in roles as diverse as management, research and development, and teaching, and in sectors ranging from aerospace to high-technology industries and biomedical research and development.

Our teaching is considered to be the finest in the UK. In the most recent HEFCE national teaching quality assessment, we were the only materials department in the country to be awarded the maximum score in each of the areas assessed.

Our facilities include cutting edge equipment and tools for advanced materials imaging and characterisation, and for studying interactions between living cells and biomaterials. A dedicated microscopy team maintains the latest technology in two sample preparation labs, a data processing suite and a new remote microscopy facility, all available to our students.

We maintain extensive contacts and relationships with relevant organisations and industry in London and overseas. This provides exciting opportunities for our students’ final year projects, industrial placements (a core part of the MEng programmes) and for the BEng Materials with a Year Abroad.
