Structural Engineering Section
Welcome to the Structural Engineering (aka Structures) section in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. The section conducts research and teaches many aspects of structural engineering and mechanics, but specializes in structures constructed from steel, other alloys and composites. Current active research areas include:
- Development of steel construction technology in bridges, buildings and offshore structures
- Behaviour and design of structures under hazardous loading conditions including seismic, fire and blast
- Theory of structural failure in metal and composite material components
- Behaviour, design and durability of concrete structures
- Progressive collapse of structures
- Structural biomechanics
See also the article in The Structural Engineer (Volume 85 number 1, pages 23-28, references online) about some recent and on-going research activities in Structural Engineering at Imperial.
Newcomers to structural engineering can see some examples of structural principles.
