Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC)

The RTSC at the Centre for Transport Studies within Imperial College was established in 1992 as a centre of excellence serving the railway industry on strategic, economic and technology issues, in the U.K. and worldwide. The last ten years have seen the RTSC broaden its international client base and strengthen its position as strategic advisors to global rail and other transport organisations. The RTSC at Imperial College is well known within the transport industry for its research in the field of transport economics & policy, public transport operations & management and its expertise in relation to the initiation, facilitation and management of multi-year international benchmarking projects.
Public transport operations and management
Within the context of benchmarking & performance measurement, the RTSC has performed a large number of research and consultancy studies on a variety of topics concerning public transport operations and management. Recent examples include: Rolling Stock Reliability, Dynamic Passenger Information, Procurement, Service Quality and Condition Monitoring.
Benchmarking and performance measurement
The RTSC facilitates and manages three programmes of international public transport benchmarking. CoMET is a consortium of twelve of the world's largest metros. Nova is made up of a consortium of fifteen small and medium sized metro systems from around the world. The International Bus Benchmarking Group comprises thirteen large and medium bus organisations.
Transport economics and policy
The RTSC has considerable experience in various areas of transport economics and policy. Recent work includes research and consultancy in fare regulation, the productivity for metros, transport and road pricing and agglomeration economics.
