3 July 2008 - Deaths of Imperial UROP students

Dear member of the Imperial College community,

The police have recently informed us of the tragic deaths of two students from the Polytech'Clermont-Ferrand/Blaise Pascal University in France, who joined the Imperial College community in May under our UROP Scheme.

Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez were spending the summer at Imperial working on research in our Department of Life Sciences. Like many of you, I was deeply saddened and very shocked to learn of their deaths on Sunday night.

Our immediate thoughts are with their families, and on behalf of the College I have written to them to express our sincere condolences. Laurent and Gabriel had bright futures ahead of them and it is dreadful that their lives should end so soon. It is extremely painful and upsetting for this to have happened in our country whilst Laurent and Gabriel were enjoying a period at Imperial.

I would also like to offer my support to the Imperial community as we mourn the loss of two young members. We offer our sympathies to those who knew and worked with Laurent and Gabriel; we are thinking of you during this very difficult time.

Yours sincerely,

Sir Roy Anderson
RECTOR

Please wrack your brains for anything you may recall that was different. If you think of anything, however insignificant it may seem to you, it could help the police to move forward on this investigation. Please call the Incident Room on +44 (0)20 8721 4155 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
