Save the Holland Club!

The Holland Club is situated at the heart of South Kensington Campus, Imperial College London. The Club was founded in 1949 and named after Sir Thomas H. Holland (FRS). It is open to all postgraduate students and academic staff. The staff and postgraduate students alike enjoy the comfortable atmosphere that has evolved in the basement of the Sherfield Building. However, Imperial College is proposing to convert this space for catering and other amenities. The PaCE group gives its full support to Save the Holland Club and to stop these changes.

The Holland Club is more than just a pub to the PaCE group. It serves as a good place for intellectual discussion after working hours and we regularly have discussions about research over a few relaxing drinks (see picture on the left). Many of our best ideas have been generated there! The Holland Club also serves as an ideal spot to host professors and guest lecturers invited by the PaCE group. If you agree with us and would like to contribute to Save the Holland Club, please sign the petition here or leave your comments here.

Siti

Siti Shamsuddin has successfully defended her thesis. Congratulations to Siti! Her work focuses on the development of high performance carbon fibre reinfoced thermoplastic composite pipes. A description of her work can be found here.

The PaCE group represented the Department of Chemical Engineering (along with Fabrican and Vibrational Spectroscopy imaging group) at this year's Imperial Festival. The Imperial Festival is a new event that celebrates the college through hands-on demonstrations, music, comedy, dancing and art. This festival is hosted by Imperial College's new Court, who welcome neighbours, friends and the general public to come and explore the best on offer from Imperial College staff and students. Photos of the event can be found here.

EPSRC Programme Grant in Composites Engineering

Prof Michael Wisnom (University of Bristol) and Alexander Bismarck (along with Prof Ian Bond, Prof Kevin Potter and Prof Paul Weaver from University of Bristol and Prof Milo Shaffer, Dr Paul Robinson and Dr Joachim Steinke from Imperial College London) were awarded a £6 million, six-year Engineering and Physical Sciences Resesarch Council (EPSRC) grant for the development of high performance ductile composites. Conventional carbon fibre composites offer high stiffness, high strength and low weight. Their application ranges from aerospace to wind turbine blades and even sporting goods. However, the fundamental problem associated with these composites is their brittleness. Failure of such composites is usually catastrophic without any warning. This EPSRC grant will develop high performce ductile composites that will enable robust panels to dent without significant loss of performances. These composites can also sustain signification deformation but still continue to support load without catastrophic failure.
