Postgraduate Prospectus

How to apply

Apply online

Applications are only accepted online

Please consult the relevant departmental and course information to view the course specification, research areas and entry requirements. If you are applying for a research programme, you are advised to contact a potential supervisor before making a formal application. You may wish to provide the supervisor with a copy of your Curriculum Vitae and indicate what your proposed topic of study is, the potential start date and how you propose to fund the project.

You will then need to submit an application for admission. Applications are only accepted online.

You may submit one application form only. This allows you two choices of programme; these will be processed according to your stated preference. It will greatly enhance the processing of your application if you are able to submit scanned copies of your educational certificates and transcripts at the same time as your application.

Please note that applications to Imperial College Business School require an application fee.

The postgraduate application cycle for 2012 is now open.

Most postgraduate courses do not have a published formal closing date, but you should be aware that popular courses close as they become full. Please therefore ensure that you make your application for these courses as early  as possible, particularly if you are intending to apply for funding, and preferably by 30 July (overseas/EU applicants) or 1 September (UK applicants) to avoid disappointment.

If you are planning to apply for College funding, you need to be aware of the various closing dates of College awards. For Funded PhD studentships, formal application deadlines can also be accessed via the Departmental websites.

Research student funding opportunities are advertised on the Graduate School websites.

Equivalent and lower qualifications

From 2009-10, the government has withdrawn funding for 'second degree students' who are studying for a qualification that is at equivalent or lower level than a qualification that they have already been awarded - these are referred to as 'ELQs'. This change means that institutions may charge a supplementary fee for such students, in order to compensate for the withdrawal of government funding.

Some subjects, including many at Imperial, are exempt: science, technology, engineering, mathematics and some healthcare professions.

Imperial College London policy will determine what charges will apply to ELQ candidates in areas affected by this change. Further information will be made available to candidates at the time of offer, and will be made available online – please check back to this page.
