Research interests

Book in preparation with Hang Ding and Stephen J. Shaw: Computational Methods for Two-Phase Flows

Within the Fluid Mechanics Focus Area in the Department, my main area of research is to develop understanding and accurate models of multiphase flows. An example is stratified and annular flow in oil/gas transport, wherein we aim to determine the physical mechanisms of interfacial wave growth, and the subsequent process of droplet entrainment into the gas. Another strand of work focuses on the numerical simulation of flows with moving contact lines, such as droplet spreading and the removal of droplets from a wall by shear. A third main interest is the numerical simulation of collapsing bubbles, for instance in cavitation and lithotripsy.

Numerical tools are not always available off the shelf to study such flows, so a secondary aim is to develop these along the way. An example is the recent development of a level-set approach and a diffuse-interface method for the numerical simulation of flows with moving contact lines, and their application to droplet removal from adhering surfaces. We have now also completed the development of a two-phase compressible solver for the simulation of collapsing air bubbles in water.

Recent sample papers:

Shock emission from collapsing gas bubbles (with S.J.Shaw)

Sliding, pinch-off and detachment of a droplet on a wall in shear flow (with H.Ding and M.N.H.Gilani)
