Jane Hendy is a part of the Healthcare Management Group and member of the Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre (
HaCIRIC). Jane previously held positions at University College London, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has a PhD from the University of Surrey in Applied Health and Social Psychology.
Jane’s research focuses on organisational change and the adoption of innovations in health care. She is particularly interested in public policy initiatives and questions relating to ICT innovations in health services. Previous work on innovation included conducting the first in-depth exploration of the £12 billion NHS National Programme for Information Technology. This work, published in the British Medical Journal, was widely reported on in the media, and presented as written and oral evidence to the House of Commons Health Select Committee inquiry into Electronic Patient Records.
Jane has been researching the national rollout of telecare services (which provide remote care for the elderly). Building on this work, Jane has recently won £345,000 from the Department of Health to research the ‘Whole System Demonstrators evaluation’. The evaluation is a £50m government initiative to introduce technology based health and social care services to help support people with chronic conditions. The evaluation involves a number of universities and Jane will investigate organisational factors underlying the successful and sustainable introduction of the new services.
Jane has experience advising government on policy. She has recently advised the National Audit Office on the report ‘The National Programme for IT in the NHS: Progress since 2006.’ Jane is a member of the Department of Health’s Telecare Advisory Network, and has strong links with the Department of Health, Care Services Improvement Partnership – to regularly give advice on the national implementation of telecare. Jane has provided expert advice on telecare for Welsh Assembly Government.
Jane is a course convenor and lecturer on the iBSc medical course (Health Services Research) and MSc International Health Management, MSc Management (Methods of Enquiry).
