PROFESSOR of EARTHQUAKE RISK ASSESSMENT
Professional Activities:
At undergraduate level, introduced new courses to the Civil Engineering syllabus at Imperial College: Engineering in Context, Engineering Seismology and a final year elective in Earthquake Engineering, which I currently coordinate and teach. Since 2003 I also coordinate a First Year module on Engineering Risk Analysis.
At postgraduate level, I teach Engineering Seismology as part of the MSc courses in Soil Mechanics & Engineering Seismology and in Earthquake Engineering; from October 2004 I will also teach the Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering components of these Masters courses.
I also teach a course on Basics of Seismology and Seismic Hazard Assessment at the European School of Advanced Studies in Reduction of Seismic Risk (ROSE) in Pavia, Italy, where I also serve as a member of the Scientific Board ( www.roseschool.it).
I am currently supervising several post-graduate researchers in the area of seismic hazard, damage assessment, strong motion studies and ground-motion parameters.
Areas of Expertise:
Engineering Seismology: earthquake ground-motion characterisation and prediction; definition of earthquake actions for seismic design; seismic hazard assessment; earthquake loss estimation.
