James is a Professor of Technology and Innovation Management and Principal Investigator of the Health and Care Infrastructure Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC). He has previously held positions at the Science Policy Research Unit (University of Sussex), University of Westminster and the Policy Studies Institute. He has a PhD from the London School of Economics and a background in geography and economics.
James researches the adoption of innovation in complex sectors of the economy. His work now focuses entirely on healthcare.
He has extensive experience advising government and industry. He led an inquiry into the uptake and spread of innovation in the NHS for the Policy Exchange and a foresight study on telecare futures for the Dept of Trade and Industry. He chaired a Department of Health working party on the evidence based for telecare benefits.
He has been an advisor on healthcare innovation issues for many government, NHS and industry bodies, and has sat on expert panels for the Dept of Trade and Industry, Dept of Health, OFCOM, the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Commission, the Royal Society and the King’s Fund, amongst others. He is an elected member of the Council of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Telemedicine and eHealth Forum.
James has also worked with companies involved in the healthcare sector and from 2007-2009 chaired a healthcare advisory board for a leading UK construction company.
