I am studying the surfaces of materials and how they interact with their environment. I am using SIMS to study surface phenomenon such as corrosion, oxidation, diffusion and segregation. I am studying the factors that determine the resolution in the SIMS process, which can be below one nanometre in favourable cases. Other work involves the use of stable isotopes to determine oxidation kinetics and mechanisms for aerospace alloys and corrosion rates in float glass. I have collaborations with museum conservators on several projects inclusing laser cleaning, albumen photographs and anoxic barrier films. I also conduct educational research into transferable skills.
I am manager of the surface analysis facility http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/materials/facilities/surfaceanalysis
