Christopher Gourlay is a Royal Academy of Engineering and EPSRC Research Fellow.  He joined Imperial College in 2008 from the University of Queensland where he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals.  He obtained his M.Eng degree from the University of Oxford in Metallurgy and Materials Science, and his PhD from the University of Queensland within the CAST Cooperative Research Centre.  His thesis was entitled “Rheology of solidifying alloys and the formation of dilatant shear bands”.

Today, Chris’ research interests lie in two areas of solidification processing:  First, on the deformation of partially solid alloys, with a focus on granular behaviour.  This research explores both the micromechanical response to load and the global rheology of partially solid alloys.  Second, his research investigates microstructure formation and semi-solid flow in the Sn-Cu-Ni lead-free solder system.
