A group of UK secondary school pupils have begun preparing for a trip of a lifetime to the NASA Johnson Space Centre to take part in an international competition to design a fictional space settlement.
The twelve secondary school pupils from Riddlesdown High in Croydon are the first team from the UK to take part in the competition in its sixteen year history. They attended an awards ceremony at Imperial College London last week to congratulate them for reaching the final of the annual International Space Settlement Design Competition in July.
Scientists from Imperial’s Department of Earth Science and Engineering helped run the search for the winning UK team in association with the organisation Youth Exploring Science (YES) and were on hand to help them prepare and answer questions.
The competition involves designing a space settlement that will enable residents to live and work in space.
