A generous gift from Mrs Marit Mohn (Chemical Engineering 1973) is to support two new PhD scholarships in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The scholarships, which are open to candidates of any nationality, provide tuition fees, a generous maintenance allowance and a bursary for travel. The first scholar will join the College in October 2015 and the second in the following autumn.

A longstanding supporter of Imperial, Mrs Mohn has made a number of gifts to support education at the College, including a 2011 donation that established the Marit Mohn PhD Scholarship scheme in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her most recent gift extends that scheme, meaning that there are now three scholarships available in the Department, a significant contribution to its research capacity.

Professor Jeff Magee, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering said: “Philanthropic support for scholarships is hugely important. It gives us the flexibility to recruit the very best candidates in priority research areas, or in important fields that are relatively underfunded by public money. The impact of Marit Mohn’s generosity will be felt across the Department of Chemical Engineering for many years to come.”

Andrew Livingston, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering said: “Marit Mohn shares our excitement about chemical engineering and our passion for engineering education and innovation. Her support for scholarships is offering life-changing opportunities for generations of chemical engineers. We are hugely grateful, not just for her financial support, but also for her interest in the Department and its development.”

"Excellence in engineering will be a key to solving many of the problems the world faces today."

Marit Mohn said: “The Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial is among the world's leaders and, as an alumna, I am proud to contribute to its further success and to give something back to the UK higher education system. Excellence in engineering will be a key to solving many of the problems the world faces today.”

Securing philanthropic support for doctoral scholarships is a key College development priority. Well-funded scholarship schemes enable Imperial to compete internationally to attract the very best PhD candidates, and are an important means to bring new talent into the College’s research community.
