Student posts a free postcard at the Centenary stand manned by Carol Marsh and Peter Gillings The annual Freshers' Fair kick started the new academic year and the beginning of Freshers' Week on Tuesday 3 October.

Hundreds of stalls were set up around Imperial's South Kensington Campus promoting the wide range of clubs and societies available for new students to join. From the Imperial gliding club, to the cheese society and the badminton club, there is always something to suit every taste.

A special Centenary stand gave the students the opportunity to find out more about the forthcoming Centenary celebrations. Over 400 students signed up to receive the fortnightly e-bulletin of the forthcoming Imperial events and 300 students posted specially provided Centenary postcards for free all around the world.

Imperial College Union supports over 250 clubs and societies and the Freshers' Fair event provides students with the chance to find out more about the range of opportunities available at the College and see the facilities the clubs and societies offer.

The RAG boys: every year students hold a number of events including the action-packed RAG week in February, to raise money for their elected charitiesAll Imperial students are automatically members of the College Union, not currently affiliated to the NUS, and can join any club or society and can even set up their own club if their particular interest is not represented.

John Collins, President of the College Union explains: "Imperial College is widely acknowledged to be one of the strongest universities in the country for clubs and societies and the annual Imperial College Union Freshers' Fair, which is a festival of extracurricular life at Imperial, is a tradition that we are keen to see continue and grow. Around 80% of Imperial's undergraduates and 50% of all Imperial's students joined at least one ICU club last year. In addition, the fair would simply not have been possible if it had not been for the efforts of a small army of volunteers, Union Officers and staff. I would like to thank everybody who helped on the day, particularly Eric Lai, Deputy President for Clubs & Societies, who led this event, for their hard work."

On Friday night, BBC Radio 1 DJ, Jo Whiley, entertained students at the Union with her DJ set and Harry Hill performed at the Beit Building last Thursday delivering a very entertaining comedy show. Other events to look forward to this week include, the Union Sports Night and Quiz night, the Medic Freshers' Ball, the Alternative Music society night and Fresh, a rock and indie night at the Union.
