Chemistry winners in first Faculty of Natural Science Awards for Excellence in Teaching

Chemistry Winners

On 10 June 2010 an event was held to celebrate the first Faculty of Natural Science Awards for Excellence in Teaching and included seven awards for the Department of Chemistry.

Faculty Principal, Professor Maggie Dallman, opened the proceedings and explained that these first Faculty of Natural Science (FoNs) Teaching Awards have been organised by the Faculty Teaching Committee and are to recognise individuals who have made a major contribution to learning and teaching within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Both Academic colleagues and students were involved in the nomination process.

Professor Alan Spivey, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry & Chair of the FoNs Teaching Awards then detailed the scope of the awards and announced the winners:

For academic staff
These awards are for any member of academic staff in the Faculty for excellence in teaching and learning, including: lecturing, laboratory demonstrating, academic tutoring, personal tutoring and introducing new teaching programs, methods and projects. The three  Department of Chemistry Staff nominated in this category: Professor Nick Long, Dr Ramon Vilar and Dr Oscar Ces were awarded Rector's Award for Excellence in Teaching (see below). 

For other teaching and teaching support staff
These awards are for Graduate Teaching Assistants, Post Doc Research Associates, Technical Staff, Teaching Support Staff and Teaching Technologists for individual excellence in teaching/learning and support of teaching/learning in the context of Departmental and Faculty teaching and learning activities including: laboratory class demonstrating, running workshops, academic tutoring, academic teaching administration and student support, and technical support of lectures and laboratories. There were four winners in the Department of Chemistry in this category:

  • Megan Wright -  For excellence in academic tutoring
  • Chris Howard  -  For excellence as a lab technician
  • Duncan Casey - For excellence in synthesis lab demonstrating
  • Dr Giuseppe Mallia - For excellence in non-synthesis lab demonstrating


The event was also used to congratulate all those in the Faculty of Natural Science who won a Rector's Award for Excellence in Teaching (awarded annually to members of academic staff judged to have been most outstanding in the quality, organisation and presentation of their teaching). These included three members of staff from the Department of Chemistry  Professor Nick Long, Dr Ramon Vilar and Dr Oscar Ces. All three will receive their awards from the Rector later this year.
