Professor Stephen Smith was a keynote speaker at the ATHENS 2012 International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management which was held on 28th-29th June 2012 in the City Hall of Papagos-Cholargos Municipality in Athens. Further details can be found at the following link: http://uest.ntua.gr/athens2012/. His paper was entitled ‘Biodrying to improve feedstock quality for advanced thermal treatment of solid waste streams’. Rather than focus on technical aspects, he used his experimental and commercial experience in developing a novel rotary biodrying technology to illustrate the barriers that often prevent the transfer of novel technologies into the waste management sector and how these might be overcome.

Professor Stephen Smith will attend the final meeting in Ottawa on 9th and 10th July 2012 of the Expert Panel on Water and Agriculture, convened by the Council of Canadian Academies to assess the Sustainable Management of Water in the Agricultural Landscapes of Canada (see News for May 2012 Angela add link to May news??). The assessment is sponsored by The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food to provide a comprehensive evaluation of what additional science is needed to better guide the sustainable management of water to address the needs of Canadian agriculture. The report on Water and Agriculture has undergone an extensive peer review and publication of the Final Report is anticipated later this year.
