Global Health Forum: Big Data Decision Support

IGHI host forum to discuss big data in medicine and healthcare & how best we can use what is available to optimise treatment and develop new cures.

The quality and quantity of available data is greater than ever before. Big data now provides tremendous potential for research and healthcare, yet we face challenges concerning how it can be effectively used to make the most of out of what we have.

The Institute of Global Health Innovation’s recent monthly Global Health Forum focused on big data decision support. The event began with a talk from David Taylor, the Programme Lead for Virtual Worlds and Medical Media at Imperial, who spoke on the connected patient and wearables.

Professor of Computing Science and Director of Imperial’s Data Science Institute, Yi-Ke Guo discussed the challenges of data integration whilst speaking about knowledge management infrastructure for big data research. Professor Franco Sassi, a Chair in International Health Policy and Economics at Imperial College Business School provided the final session for the forum, using research on alcohol consumption and other research areas to look at how we can understand health related behaviours.

IGHI’s monthly Global Health Forums provide a platform to bring together Imperial researchers, students, and staff from across all of Imperial’s Faculties to highlight, discuss and disseminate findings on current research and innovations on relevant global health topics. The Forums encourage interdisciplinary discussions with the intention that they will foster inter-Faculty research initiatives and leverage the immense strengths of Imperial College to resolve global health priorities of the early 21st Century.
