Dr Vincenzo Torraca awarded Marie Curie Research Fellowship

by

Dr Vincenzo Torraca

Vincenzo will join the Mostowy lab in 2016 to investigate cell-autonomous immunity in vivo using the zebrafish infection model.

Vincenzo obtained his MSc in Biology from Salerno University, Italy. During his MSc he was selected for an Erasmus Program Scholarship to advance his research training at Leiden University, the Netherlands, where he used the zebrafish (Danio rerio) model to investigate the function of an alternative isoform of the glucocorticoid receptor.

For his PhD at Leiden University, he joined the Marie Curie International Training Network “FishForPharma” under the supervision of Prof A.H. Meijer. His PhD project focused on use of the zebrafish-Mycobacterium marinum infection model as a surrogate host-pathogen system to study human tuberculosis. His research helped to elucidate the role of chemokine signaling during macrophage recruitment, macrophage-mediated mycobacterial dissemination, and granuloma formation.

For his postdoc, Vincenzo has been awarded a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship to join the Mostowy lab and investigate cell-autonomous immunity in vivo using the zebrafish infection model. His unique approach to study the cell biology of infection in vivo should provide insights important to control infection and treat antimicrobial resistance.
