Linking Local Agriculture, Nutrition & Education: Innovations to Improve Food Security

On Wednesday 8th February 2012, Sir Gordon Conway spoke at a Parliamentary meeting hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development in conjunction with The Partnership for Child Development.  

This All Party Parliamentary Group meeting focussed on food security in order to raise wider awareness and stimulate dialogue on food security initiatives, including government-led school feeding programmes.

The meeting has already received media coverage in Ghana.

His Excellency John Kufuor, Former President of Ghana and 2011 World Food Prize Laureate

During his Presidency of Ghana, John Kufuor implemented major economic and educational policies that increased the quality and quantity of food to Ghanaians, enhanced farmers’ incomes, and improved school attendance and child nutrition through a nationwide feeding program. President Kufuor has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Face-of-Good-Governance Award, Chatham House Prize, the Climate Change Award, the World Food Program’s Global Ambassador Against Hunger, and most recently he was chosen to receive the 2011 World Food Prize.

Professor Sir Gordon Conway, Professor of International Development, Agriculture for Impact, The Centre for Environmental Policy

Gordon Conway is a Professor of International Development at Imperial College, London where he is currently working on a grant funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation entitled ‘Agriculture for Impact’ which focuses on European support of agricultural development in Africa. He holds five honorary degrees and fellowships and is the author of multiple publications including ‘The Doubly Green Revolution: Food for all in the 21st Century'.

Professor Don Bundy, Lead Health Specialist, The World Bank

Don Bundy is the World Bank’s Lead Specialist for Health, Nutrition and Population in the Africa Region and has been a pioneer in raising the profile of school health and HIV prevention on the agendas of governments and development partners. Before joining the World Bank, he was Professor of Epidemiology at Oxford University. He has authored more than 300 publications, including three best-selling books, and has twice been awarded the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle for his work in documentary film making, which includes an award winning public television series called “Behind the Crisis”. 

Dr. Boitshepo Giyose, Food and Nutrition Advisor, The New Economic Partnership for African Development (NEPAD)

Boitshepo Giyose is the Senior Food & Nutrition Security Advisor for The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) which is a programme of the African Union. She is responsible for planning, and advising high level officials on food and nutrition security matters and policy direction while advocating with the UN and other organizations with a commitment to improve food security and nutrition in Africa.
