Birthday Honours for alumni and staff

MBE medal

Twelve Imperial College alumni and two members of academic staff have been honoured in this month's Birthday Honours list.

The 2009 Birthday Honours list honoured 12 Imperial College alumni for outstanding achievement and service across the UK community.

Five alumni were awarded CBEs: Dr Martin Barnes (Civil Engineering 1960) for services to civil engineering, Professor Yvonne Carter (St Mary's Hospital Medical School 1983) for services to medical education, Brigadier Christopher Parker (Westminster Medical School 1981) in the Military Division of the list, Peter Saraga (MPhil Electrical Engineering 1969) for services to science and engineering, and Ian Shott (Chemical Engineering 1978) for services to the chemical engineering industry.

Dr Thomas Coffey (Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School 1988), Dr Annette Doherty (PhD Chemistry 1985), Dr Alan Hepper (Mechanical Engineering 1988, PhD 1998), Dr Robert Hunt (Physics 1943, DIC 1947) and Alan Moore (Mechanical Engineering 1970) all became the proud recipients of OBEs, and Professor Raymund Donnelly (St Mary's Hospital Medical School 1961) was awarded a MBE.

Two of Imperial's academics were also recognised: Professor Anne Dell was made a CBE and Dr Caroline Shuldham received an OBE. In addition, Fellow and former Deputy Rector of Imperial, Professor Sir Bill Wakeham, now Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, received a knighthood for services to chemical engineering and higher education.

Professor Dell's CBE is in recognition of her services to science. Based in the College's Department of Life Sciences, she joined Imperial in 1975, after completing her PhD at Cambridge. During her time at the College she has held many senior positions, including heading the Department of Biochemistry, and holding a prestigious BBSRC professorial fellowship from 2001–2007.

Dr Caroline Shuldham (PhD National Heart and Lung Institute 1999), also an alumnus of the College, received her OBE for services to healthcare. Dr Shuldham is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the College's National Heart and Lung Institute and she has a background in cardiac and intensive care nursing, nursing education, and research. She is also director of nursing, clinical governance and informatics at Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, and is a nurse fellow of the European Society of Cardiology.
