Summer building work in Central Library starting this week

Central Library

Beginning this week, an environmental control system will be installed in Central Library. Find out how it might affect your library use.

The project will address the issues with temperature and ventilation and improve the working environment.

Preparatory building works were completed earlier this year and we are pleased to inform our users that commencing Saturday 1 July, the main phase of the project will begin. There will be noise during the works and space will be limited in the Library, but we will keep disruption to a minimum.

Changes to study space

The building works will affect study space on levels 3, 4 and 5.

Levels 4 and 5 will be closed from 17.00 on Friday 30 June and reopen in November with air conditioning and a new layout, including new furniture and improved power to desks.

Level 3 will be closed from 17.00 on Friday 30 June to allow for the temporary relocation of books from levels 4 and 5. It will reopen on Monday 10 July and will house mainly books. There will also be a small amount of study space on level 3.

During the building works, study spaces will continue to be available on levels 1 and 2, but the number of PCs in the Library will be significantly reduced.  Following consultation with library users, level 2 of the library will be rezoned as a silent study area for the duration of the building project.

Central Library users will be welcome to use our campus libraries.  In addition, the Faculty of Medicine have kindly agreed that during the summer vacation period, users from around College can make use of computer clusters G27, G28 and G29 in the Sir Alexander Fleming Building.

Book moves

Throughout the summer and in October, the majority of the books will be available on level 3.

Book moves will take place from the evening of Friday 30 June to Sunday 9 July. While books are being moved a large section of the collection will be unavailable.

If you know you will need a book between 1 July and 9 July, please borrow it before 1 July.

The collection will be available again from Monday 10 July.
