Imperial College London researcher awarded EPSRC fellowship

Dr Miao Guo

Dr Miao Guo of the Department of Chemical Engineering has been awarded a fellowship to work on engineering for sustainability and resilience.

Enabling UK engineering researchers to engage with the grand challenges of sustainability is important for the future of the UK and this is recognised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Each year they reward outstanding individuals with a fellowship to establish themselves as a leader in the field.

The most recent set of awards included Dr Miao Guo, a Research Associate in the group led by Prof Nilay Shah at Centre for Process Systems Engineering (CPSE). Originally coming to Imperial College London to do a PhD in the Department of Life Sciences, Miao has been carrying out research in CPSE, focusing on UK bioenergy value chain design to incorporate resource-competition multi-systems(bioenergy vs. non-energy sectors) and ecosystem services into bioenergy system modelling.

“I am delighted that Miao has been awarded this prestigious fellowship,” says Professor Claire Adjiman, Director of CPSE, “We need to keep encouraging our early career researchers and this gives Miao an excellent opportunity to fulfil her potential. I’m confident we will see great thing from Miao in the next few years.”

The core of the fellowship is not only the ability to focus on a research project but also funding for that project. Over the next three year’s Miao will lead the Resilient and Sustainable Biorenewable Systems Engineering Model (ReSBio). The project aims to develop an open-source biorenewable system model and provide insights into sustainable design of future biorenewable systems.

“This fellowship lets me work on what I want, at this point in my career I don’t think I could have asked for a better opportunity,” says Miao, “I greatly appreciate the excellent support and kind help from wonderful people around the college. Without the strong support from the Department and my mentor Prof Nilay Shah, the support from Energy Futures Lab, Grantham Institute and advice from great academics and professionals at Imperial, this would not have been possible.”

“It is great to see Miao being recognised by EPSRC with the award of this fellowship,” says Professor Nilay, head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, “She is a key member of the team and her application could not have been stronger. I look forward to watching her career go from strength to strength in the coming years.”

Imperial College London is already recognised as a world leader in interdisciplinary research. Key to maintaining this position is supporting all researchers at the College in furthering their careers. To this end last year Energy Futures Lab setup a programme to provide support and advice for fellowship applications to early career researchers. In the first cohort was Miao.

“At Imperial we pride ourselves on creating the future leaders in their fields and our supporting fellowship applications is just one way we do that.” says Professor Tim Green, Energy Futures Lab Director, “It’s great to see it being so effective so quickly.”

The EPSRC fellowships accept applications on a rolling basis. If you are interested in applying for one on an energy-reated topic and want support from Energy Futures Lab please contact Victoria Ebo.
