Ours is one of the largest and most advanced Mechanical Engineering departments in the world and we were rated top in the 2008 UK Government Research Assessment Exercise.

We have also been rated as outstanding for our excellence in teaching. Prospective students who directly use Government Statistics will find that compared to other Mechanical Engineering students:

  • Our undergraduates have the highest entry grades, while
  • 85% of our graduates expressed satisfaction with their course, and
  • 100% of those graduating last year found employment with the highest of starting salaries.

Mechanical engineering continues to play a key role in developing, operating and manufacturing new machines, devices and processes to benefit mankind.

Mechanical engineers apply their creative imaginations and professional skills in a variety of situations. To put theory into practice, they need in-depth understanding of scientific principles. They also need an ability to develop solutions to real-life problems with conflicting requirements. In the commercial world they combine technical and management skills to give their companies a competitive edge.

Mission Statement

The Department's overall mission is to deliver world-class scholarship, education and research in Mechanical Engineering, with particular regard to their application in industry, healthcare and commerce.
