About Roaming

Imperial is a participant in the Janet Roaming Service. This service allows members of college to access the network at other participating sites using their college credentials. It also allows guests from participating sites to access the network at Imperial using their existing credentials.

The JRS is a member of the eduroam federation, which extends the scope of participating organisations internationally. Please see the links to the right for locations of participating institutions.

Terms & Conditions - Members of Imperial

All members of college are eligible to use the JRS / eduroam service. However, the Imperial security policy requires to you obey the relevant JANET policies when using eduroam.

Terms & conditions - visitors to imperial

Visitors to Imperial must abide by the Terms & Conditions of computer use at Imperial, as well as those from your own institution. Please read the Imperial terms carefully:

Security Policies

Specifically you must comply with the "Conditions of Use of IT Facilities" and of course all local laws and regulations.

Availability

JRS/eduroam network access is available throughout Imperial wherever there is wireless coverage.

Configuration

College Members

Configure your wireless connection as per the appropriate instructions for the Imperial-WPA network. However rather than the ssid "Imperial-WPA" use "eduroam" (7 characters, all lower-case). For your username use username@imperial.ac.uk where username is your ordinary college username (not email address). Do not specify a domain (ie. do not specify the IC domain).

Visitors

Configure your wireless connection as specified by your home institution for a JRS2 connection. Note that the network at Imperial only supports WPA2 with AES encryption.

Troubleshooting

College Members

You should configure and test eduroam before you travel to another institute.

If you have problems using eduroam, please contact the ICT Service Desk, supplying the following information:

  • Date and time you had problems (including what timezone these are in!)
  • Wireless MAC address - follow the instructions here to obtain this
  • The name of the institute you are visiting

Visitors

Visitors should first contact their home site. The home site will liase with the visited site as required.

Firewall

The firewall between visitors to Imperial and the Internet allows the following -

  • IPv6 Tunnel Broker NAT traversal: UDP/3653;TCP/3653 egress and established.
  • IPSec NAT traversal: UDP/4500 egress and established.
  • Cisco IPSec NAT traversal: UDP/10000; TCP/10000 egress and established.
  • PPTP: IP protocol 47 (GRE) egress and established; TCP/1723 egress and established.
  • OpenVPN: UDP/1194; TCP/1194 egress and established.
  • NTP: UDP/123 egress and established
  • SSH: TCP/22 egress and established.
  • HTTP: TCP/80 egress and established.
  • HTTPS: TCP/443 egress and established.
  • LDAP: TCP/389 egress and established.
  • LDAPS: TCP/636 egress and established.
  • IMSP: TCP/406 egress and established.
  • IMAP4: TCP/143 egress and established.
