PhD in Translation Studies

The Translation Group in the Department of Humanities at Imperial College invites applications from students wishing to study for the degree of PhD by undertaking research in any area or discipline related to Translation.

In the first instance, you should establish a dialogue with a potential supervisor before making a formal application. You should supply your CV, and indicate what your proposed topic of study is and how you propose to fund yourself. The following document provides some advice on how to write your PhD proposal.

Registration

Unlike taught courses, which start in September, it is possible to start a research degree any month of the year.

For full-time students the minimum period of study is normally three years. For those studying on a part-time basis, the College will prescribe a minimum period of attendance appropriate to the particular circumstances. More information on how to apply can be found here.

Research Facilities

As a research student in the Department of Humanities at Imperial College you are able to use the networked computers in the departmental PhD room and have access to all the research libraries in London. You may, for instance, use without charge the entensive Library of the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies (School of Advanced Study, University of London), that of the School of Slavonic Studies at University College London, the Spanish history holdings of the Library of King's College London or the London School of Economics and Political Science and the Translation Studies holdings at University College London. Furthermore, the world-famous British Library is only a short journey away from the South Kensington campus of Imperial College where the Humanities Programme is situated.

Transferable Skills Programme

The Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine (GSLSM) focus on postgraduate education and research in the areas of life sciences and medicine, including translation. The focus of activity is not only on specialist academic training, but also, in particular, on interdisciplinarity and transferable skills.

GSLSM provides a comprehensive Transferable Skills Programme for our research students to enhance their time at Imperial and to assist with their research, professional and personal development.

Language Learning

If you want to improve your command of a foreign language or to embark on a new one, day and evening classes at all levels from beginners to advanced are available within the college. The languages offered are Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
