The MSc in Scientific, Technical and Medical Translation with Translation Technology has been running since 2001 and is designed to provide training for those intending to enter the field of specialised translation. The course offers you the opportunity to develop your translation and language skills, to deepen your understanding of the workings of language as an essential tool of communication and to gain vital experience in the rapidly developing area of translation technology.
As a graduate of the programme you will be equipped with the practical competence needed for professional work in the fields of translation, subtitling and software localisation and for research work in translation studies. Moreover, the focus on scientific, technical and medical translation together with the emphasis on computational tools and translation practice in specific language pairs makes this attractive course a unique contribution to translation studies in the UK.
At Imperial College we prepare you for the professional world, by translating work on the widest possible variety of material, ranging from medical reports and research papers, through patents and product documentation, to publicity material, audiovisual programmes, web pages and software.
During the course, you will become conversant with the computer-based translation technology which has been transforming the way in which professional translators work. You will also experience a number of translation-related roles, such as those of terminologist, proof-reader, desk-top publishing specialist and project manager.
Our MSc in Translation is part of the European Master's in Translation (EMT) network.
We work closely with the specialist software providers and other industry partners to ensure that the course possesses the maximum of professional relevance.
We are also corporate members of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and have a good working relationship with this professional body's London Regional Group, from whose ranks a number of our tutors are drawn.
A Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma are not available on this programme.
