The Department of Humanities offers credit courses to undergraduate students in languages and humanities, evening courses for non-credit for students and staff, English language support and postgraduate courses and research in the history of science, technology and medicine, science communication as well as translation. We also offer a language lab for self-study and a programme of stand-alone one day courses in translation technology.

The main areas covered by the department are:

Foreign Language Courses

6 foreign languages are available for undergraduates to study for part-credit towards their degrees,  and 7 for non-credit.  There are also 2 fully equipped language laboratories for self-access study of 36 languages. Please note that these courses are intended for students of Imperial College London only.  Members of the public interested in learning a language should enrol on an evening class instead (please see below).

Humanities Courses

Humanities courses (in history, philosophy, politics, ethics, music, music technology, creative writing and science communication) are offered for undergraduates to study for part credit towards their degree. Any member of the college is welcome to attend the lectures for their own interest, where spaces are available.  Please note that these courses are intended for students of Imperial College London only.  Members of the public interested in taking a Humanities course should enrol on an evening class instead (please see below).

The Department is delighted to announce that Greg Artus (Lecturer for the 'Philosophy' and 'Politics' courses) has been awarded  one of the College's much coveted Excellence in Teaching  awards.  May 23rd 2011.

Evening Class Programme

Evening classes in 10 languages and a variety of humanities subjects are available at the South Kensington campus, between October and March only, to any member of the College and the general public to study for recreation. Classes meet once per week over two terms.

English Language Support Programme

The English Language Support Programme offers English classes to non-native English speaking Imperial College students and staff. In addition, ELSP organises a summer pre-sessional English course and operates the internal Imperial College Postgraduate English requirement

Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHOSTM)

The history of science and technology has been taught and researched at Imperial College since 1963. The Centre runs an active Graduate Programme which supports doctoral research studies for MPhil/PhD degrees and also offers two MSc courses in the History of Science, Medicine and Technology. The MSc programme is run through the London Centre for the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, combining the resources of CHOSTM with University College London Department of Science and Technology Studies 

Science Communication Group

The Science Communication Group provides postgraduate teaching and research in science media production, science communication and public understanding of science. Our core activity is running two postgraduate taught courses in Science Communication and  Science Media Production. These provide an excellent, specialised, pre-vocational education for scientists and science graduates who aspire to become journalists, broadcast producers, museum professionals, or press and public relations people. 

MSc in Scientific, Technical and Medical Translation with Translation Technology

This Masters programme is designed to provide training for those intending to enter the field of specialised translation. 

Translation Technology Short Courses 

This is a programme of one-day courses which are open to members of the public as well as staff and students of the College.

Postgraduate Research

The department also invites applications from postgraduates wishing to study towards an MPhil or PhD in: Chinese studies; German and Austrian Literature and Cultural studies; Italian History and Cultural studies; Japanese studies; Russian Literature and Language; Spanish History and Cultural studies; History  of Science, Technology and Medicine; Science Communication and Translation studies.

BSc Hons and MSc Language for Science Degrees 

The Department of Humanities, in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry and the Department  of Life Sciences, currently offers BSc. Degrees in Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology with a Language for Science (French, Spanish or German), and an MSc Degree in Chemistry with a Language for Science (French, Spanish or German). These degrees are designed for students who wish to add the study of a language to their Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Chemistry course. The language elements combine with the compulsory Degree modules.

Translation Services - Imperial College Translation Centre

NEW! We are pleased to annouce that we will shortly be offering an internal translation service to departments and members of the College.
