Imperial College London wins Outstanding Support for Early Careers Researchers at the Times Higher Education Awards 2008

Imperial College London has won the Outstanding Support for Early Careers Researchers at the Times Higher Education Awards 2008 ceremony held on 23 October 2008 at Grosvenor House Hotel, London. Imperial was one of six universities shortlisted for the award but pipped the rest to the post due to its outstanding work in the field.

Judge Jane Metcalfe, Chair and head of Vitae said: "Imperial College's innovative Finish Up, Move On hits the spot brilliantly by cleverly combining researchers' preoccupation with completing their doctorate with the importance of thinking about "what next?" and that of leadership and entrepreneurial thinking."

The fourth annual Times Higher Education Awards ceremony recognised the ground-breaking work undertaken by UK higher education institutions. Over 130 institutions submitted entries for the 18 categories which included Best Student Experience, University of the Year, Outstanding Student Financial Support Package, Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community, Marketing Initiative of the Year and Outstanding Support for Disabled Students.

Ann Mroz, Editor of the Times Higher Education, commented: "Imperial College London's Finish Up, Move On course is a first-rate development that has positively impacted on students' post-PhD transition. The focus is highly innovative and the involvement of alumni in the course has added to its unique influence. Highly relevant to students, it is good to see that Imperial do not rest on their laurels and constantly look for ways to improve their approach."
