The Electron Microscopy Centre (South Kensington Campus) encompasses the existing UK national centre for electron microscopy of biological macromolecules (CBEM, created in 1997) and the newly opened cell biology unit funded by the government’s Science Research Initiative. It is a cross faculty centre (with Faculty of Medicine) managed by the Division of Molecular Biosciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences established in June 2007.

The aim of the EM centre is to provide a high quality bespoke EM solutions (for Cell Biology and Single Particle research) for Imperial College’s scientific community and to provide a cutting-edge technical environment with a specialised support team where college staff and students can learn complex research skills and methodologies in EM technologies.

This central research infrastructure allows the visualisation of biological structures from protein macromolecules to cellular organisation and provides service, consultancy and training for internal, national and international users.
