Info IconThe Department of Earth Science and Engineering is one of the world’s leading centres for geoscience research.

In 2001 the Department achieved the highest possible 5* rating in the Research Assessment Exercise. In 2008, 70% of our research was rated in the top two categories of ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.

Research

This Department receives more money from industry for research than any other comparable department in the UK.

Research Sections

Our research is organised into three broad Research Sections.  All PhD students, research and academic staff belong to one of these sections.

Specialist Research Groups

Several specialist research groups operate across the Research Sections.  These groups focus upon particular problems and systems.
