NERC Centre for Population Biology

NERC Centre for Population Biology

The Centre for Population Biology is a NERC funded collaborative centre, established in 1989 to increase knowledge of how ecological systems function.  It lies within the Division of Biology in the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Silwood Park Campus.

Its scientific aims are:

To study the fundamental ecological processes which link individuals, populations and whole communities of plants, animals and micro-organisms.
To improve the scientific basis for understanding and predicting ecological processes, and the consequences of human impacts upon ecosystems.
To show how this knowledge can be applied to the rational management of the environment, with benefits for the quality of life and economic sustainability.
To train young post-graduate (PhD) and post-doctoral scientists.

Research is concentrated on the three thematic research areas. Internal and external collaborative links are achieved through our collaborative workshops and joint activities with UKPopNet

We also host databases and the Ecotron facility.
