Centre for Integrative Systems Biology and Bioinformatics

About CISBIO

The Centre for Integrative Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (CISBIO) was launched in June 2011 as a result of the merger of the Centre for Integrative Systems Biology at Imperial College (CISBIC) and the Centre for Bioinformatics.

The mission of CISBIO is:

  •  promote research and training in systems biology and bioinformatics across the College;
  • study the function of biological systems by understanding the integration of their component parts;
  • demonstrate that the interdisciplinary cycle of experiment and modelling delivers major biological and biomedical  insights;develop and sustain a core of multidisciplinary expertise and facilities which can champion systems biology and bioinformatics;
  • develop external links with industry and academic institutions both nationally and internationally;

The Centre for Bioinformatics

The Imperial College Centre for Bioinformatics was established in 2001 with the mission of promoting and co-ordinating world-class research and training in Bioinformatics within Imperial College and to provide state-of-the-art Bioinformatics support to members of Imperial College for their research.  The research interests of the affiliates of the Centre spanned sequence analysis, protein modelling, statistical genetics and evolution with several groups focussing on statistical, mathematical and computational analyses. Increasingly many groups developed a research interest in systems biology modelling and additional became members of CISBIC.

 A key component of the Centre for Bioinformatics is the Bioinformatics Support Service (BSS) which has a team able to provide assistance and bespoke programming across a wide range of topics including sequence analysis; the processing and analysis of genomic, transciptomic, metabolomic, proteomic, bio-image and glycomic data; development of resources for data integration; and the construction of clinical databases. In addition the BSS maintains a dedicated bioinformatics compute infrastructure and a wide range of cerntrally-installed bioinformatics software.

The Centre for Integrative Systems Biology at Imperial College  (CISBIC)

In March 2005, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) announced an investment totalling around £40m in six new Centres for Integrative Systems Biology. One Centre was founded at Imperial College – The Centre for Integrative Systems Biology at Imperial College - CISBIC). Five other centres were established in the UK:  at the Universities of Manchester (Manchester Centre for Integrative Systems Biology - MCISB); Newcastle (Centre for Integrated Systems Biology of Aging and Nutrition - CISBAN); Edinburgh (Centre for Systems Biology at Edinburgh - CSBE); Nottingham (Centre for Plant Integrative Biology - CPIB) and Oxford (Oxford Integrative Systems Biology Centre - OISBC).

CISBIC was awarded £7m and focussed on an exemplar research project using a multi-disciplinary approach to study host/pathogen interactions. Central to the approach is the cycle of experimentation and modelling. See further details on Systems Biology. In addition CISBIC developed and provided a set of core facilities  to underpin this interdisciplinary approach. View the members of CISBIC.
