Department of Chemical Engineering

Research Group: Biomedical Engineering (BME)

This focus area is built at the interface of traditional engineering and biological and medical sciences. Our mission is to combine the core principles from chemical, materials and mechanical engineering with modern biology and medicine to develop new approaches to biomedical engineering and technology. Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a new, challenging and exciting field. Our research is highly interdisciplinary and involves extensive collaborations with other faculties in the College, as well as leading London hospitals, industrial and university partners all over the world. Our research activities range from experimental work related to tissue engineering and stem cells to computational modelling of biological systems at various scales. Examples of our current research activities are:

  • Fluid dynamics in microgravity bioreactors
  • Computer simulation of the growth processes of biological cultures on scaffolds
  • Intelligent stem cell culture systems
  • Design and modelling of 3-D perfused bone marrow culture system
  • Oxygen transport simulation in the human bone marrow
  • Predicting the risk of rupture for patients with abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms
  • Imaging and modelling of flow patterns in the human coronary artery
  • Lower limb venous haemodynamics
  • Modelling of the mass transport of atherogenic molecules in large arteries
  • Modelling of genetic regulations of mammalian cell cultures
  • Model based and parametric control for drug delivery systems
  • Design of porous media for biomedical applications

We have a large team of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers engaged in experimental and computational studies. Our research laboratories are exceptionally well equipped and first class computing facilities are provided. Opportunities for new Ph.D. and MSc. students exist in all areas of our activities and we would be pleased to discuss the possibilities for research projects with potential students.
