Department of Chemical Engineering

Research: Focus Areas

The extensive and wide ranging research in the Department has been grouped into eleven focus areas, each under one of six research themes:

Biological Engineering:

 • BME - Biomedical Engineering
 • BBE - Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering

Natural Resource Engineering:

 • EngE - Energy Engineering
 • EnvE - Environmental Engineering

Fluids Engineering:

 • FM - Fluid Mechanics
 • MMT - Molecular Modelling and Thermodynamics

Particle and Materials Engineering:

 • CM - Complex Materials
 • SI - Surfaces and Interfaces

Process Systems Engineering:

 • PSE - Process Systems Engineering

Reaction and Separation Engineering:

 • REaCT - Reaction Engineering and Catalytic Technology
 • SET- Separation Engineering and Technology

Each is organised by a Focus Area Co-ordinator and these, collectively, form the Research Committee - the group that provides strategic advice to the Department on all research matters. Many staff will be members of more than one programme, and much collaborative work is undertaken between the programmes - e.g. modelling expertise from PSE with experimental work in BSE.
