Safety Audit

The Chemical Engineering Department was audited in December 2010 and full details are available in the audit report: CE-DEC2010AUDIT

A Safety Working Party has been established to consider the recommendations. The membership of this party is Andrew Livingston, Pim Amrit and Severine Toson.

COMPLIANCE WITH THE NEW SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Following the recent Safety Audit, we are looking into making fundamental adjustments in the departmental Safety Management System, in order to remedy deficiencies and align with the College Health and Safety Management System.

Requirements are as follows:

1. All Academic Supervisors, Heads of Services, Post-Docs, PhD students and MSc students must complete the online RAFT course and pass the test. Passing the RAFT test is a requirement for the approval of the Risk Assessment Forms you submit to the Departmental Safety Team and before starting any experimental work.

2. All Academic Supervisors, Senior Research Investigators or retired staff who carry out any activity or are principal supervisor for the activity of others and Service Managers, regardless of the nature of their work must attend the Health and Safety Responsibilities for Academic Supervisors course. If you have not attended one of our in-house sessions, you will need to enrol on one of the monthly sessions given by the Safety Department, through "My Training". Please see the demo.

3. All Academic Supervisors and Service Managers are required to familiarise themselves with the new Asset Management System and start registering their assets with the departmental Safety Team (ce-safety-team@imperial.ac.uk).

Severine can be contacted for assistance with filling in the new forms, and is also available to give Safety Workshops where the New System is explained and worked examples given.

Our target is for all Assets to be registered before the end of the Summer term (1 July 2011). Any assets that are not correctly registered by then will be taken out of use, and may not be further used for research.

4. Risk Assessments must be conducted on all experimental activities and appropriate Risk Assessment Forms registered with the departmental Safety Team (ce-safety-team@imperial.ac.uk).

Pim and Severine are available to explain how the new system works, answer any additional questions and help everyone kick off their asset registrations and risk assessments.
