How we support academic departments
Careers Advisers work with academics, mainly Departmental Careers Advisers, but occasionally also Director of Undergraduate Studies, MSc Course Leaders and Senior Tutors, to ensure that all students receive be-spoke Careers Education, Information and Guidance (CEIG) relevant to the stage they’re at. Careers Advisers work with the Graduate Schools and the Staff Development Unit to provide support to research students and staff.
- The QAA Code of Practice on CEIG can be downloaded from the 'Policy documents' section (in 'About us'); this outlines best practice for the delivery of careers education, information and guidance.
Departmental support from the Careers Advisory Service
Each department has a Departmental Careers Adviser (DCA), usually an academic, who liaises with one of the Careers Advisers to organise the programme of CEIG for undergraduates, delivered mainly through talks to students, within the department.
Careers Advisers give talks and run workshops on themes such as the following, in collaboration with Departmental Careers Advisers:
- ‘Career and Personal Development Planning for 1st Years’
- 'Job hunting and internships - for 2nd Years’
- ‘Preparing CVs and Applications’
- ‘Interviews and Assessment Centres’.
Contact the DCA for your Department to see the CEIG policy for that department.
The Careers Advisory Service (CAS) staff are in regular contact with employers who target Imperial students and staff can advise students as well as colleagues about recent trends in graduate and postgraduate recruitment. CAS staff contribute actively to key national professional networks.
Every year the CAS collects data on ‘first destinations’ of graduates and postgraduates within six months of leaving Imperial, for each department. This is useful information for Marketing and Admissions. The CAS also assists at College Open Days and Outreach events, dealing with careers-related queries and giving talks.
All Careers Advisers are qualified to use and interpret MBTI and run MBTI workshops to help students increase their self-awareness. The CAS also enables students to prepare for psychometric tests by providing timed online tests with feedback on the website.
Careers Advisers are sometimes asked for advice by academic staff on writing references for students.
