Institute of Biomedical Engineering

About the InstituteThe Institute ofr Biomedical Engineering Research

Technology has entered a new era inspired by lifestyle and healthcare. The Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a postgraduate research facility, is applying advances in technology to enable people to lead independent and productive lives despite illness, ageing and disability. The Institute was established with £22 million from the Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF) and significant other charitable investments.

The Institute draws together scientists, medics and engineers to apply their extensive expertise to create revolutionary progress in medical diagnosis and treatment. The research programme is focussed at the intersections between the platform technologies in science and engineering, such as systems biology, materials, imaging and nanotechnology, and medical applications, such as bionics, biomechanics and tissue engineering. Providing a multi-disciplinary research environment, we ensure that the extensive knowledge and skills of the scientists and engineers is applied to the challenges facing health care professionals. We work in collaboration with clinicians, who guide technology development priorities, and with industrial partners, in proof of concept and early stage product development.

Combining the strengths of two world class research schools in engineering and medicine, Imperial College is creating an international centre of excellence in biomedical engineering research pioneering breakthrough science

  • using engineering platforms to find medical solutions
  • innovating using the ingredients from different disciplines
  • developing end to end infrastructure from a range of technologies
  • cultivating inter-disciplinary intellectual property
  • accelerating the commercial realisation of technologies to improve people's lives.

Engineering researchers are driving change in medical technologies using engineering platforms for medicine

The majority of academic appointments are jointly funded with other College departments.

Research facilities

The Institute has purpose built laboratories with 'state of the art' facilities on the South Kensington Campus at Imperial.

Occupying 4 floors, there is space and facilities to integrate and consolidate the current activities within the field of biomedical engineering at Imperial College.  There is laboratory space not only for researchers permanently attached to the Institute, but other staff from Imperial College, PhD Scholars and visiting academics needing access to specialised facilities during specific projects. Amongst the laboratory facilities are specialised spaces for microscopy, image analysis, micropower testing, scanning probe, biotelemetry, instrumentation, third generation biomaterials processing, hierarchical materials characterisation and biophotonics. The Institute also incorporates a purpose built bionanotechnology centre funded by the Department of Trade and Industry.

Investment funding

Investment funding is 'pump priming' research, funding the initiation of projects in advance of grants from more traditional sources.  It is also funding a PhD studentship programme to appoint highly qualified UK and overseas students. This will maintain the competitiveness of the Institute at international level.
