Department of  Bioengineering

Welcome to the Department of Bioengineering

Bioengineering at Imperial has a distinguished history, starting with pioneering research in the 1960s that shaped the emergence of the discipline.  In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 75% of the Department's returned research was judged either 4* "world-leading* or 3* "internationally excellent".  This excellent result reflected the continuing high standard of our research and confirmed our position as the leading Department of Bioenginering in the UK.  We are now expanding  to maintain our leading position in basic and applied research, and to continue to provide excellent training in bioengineering through our popular undergraduate, masters and PhD programmes. Explore our webpages to find out more about the Department and its history, staff, research and teaching.

Medical Engineering in Osteoarthritis Centre of Excellence

The Department has been successful in securing £11 million from the Wellcome Trust and EPSRC to create a centre of excellence at Imperial College London dedicated to the improvement of diagnosis, understanding, surgical management and rehabilitative treatment of osteoarthritis. Led by the Head of Department, Professor Ross Ethier, the project is cross disciplinary involving engineers, clinicians and scientists from a variety of departments and institutes across College including the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Materials and the Division of Surgery, Oncology, Reproductive Biology and Anaesthetics.
